Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is set to be a free agent during the 2023 offseason, and there should be plenty of suitors for his services.
Garoppolo has been a part of a handful of deep postseason runs, but the general perception of him is that he can't elevate a team to a Super Bowl title. However, he's generally viewed as a top-20 quarterback in the NFL, so he'll always have a market. There are plenty of QB-needy teams heading into the 2023 season. Derek Carr has already found a home in New Orleans, while there's real buzz between the New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers.
With the Las Vegas Raiders still needing to replace Carr, could Garoppolo be their target in free agency? Let's dive in.

Jimmy Garoppolo 2022 Season Review
Trey Lance was named the starter for Week 1, but he suffered a broken ankle in the Week 2 win over the Seattle Seahawks. This led to Garoppolo retaking his starting position.
In 11 games, Garoppolo completed 207 of his 308 passing attempts for 2,437 yards, 16 passing touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He looked sharp as always, facilitating the ball to the elite player-makers on the 49ers roster. Unfortunately, Jimmy G suffered a broken foot in the December win over the Miami Dolphins, effectively ending his season.
With Brock Purdy finding success and Lance coming back in 2023, Garoppolo's time in San Fran has come to an end.
Will the Raiders Sign Jimmy Garoppolo?
Garoppolo is expected to draw plenty of interest on the free agent market and the Las Vegas Raiders appear to be in the mix, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano. The Raiders are reportedly eyeing Aaron Rodgers but could view Garoppolo as their backup plan.
It's worth noting that Garoppolo is familiar with Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels from their time with the New England Patriots. The 31-year-old has struggled to stay healthy in recent years but has been a reliable option at quarterback when he does play. It wouldn't be shocking to see the Raiders ink Garoppolo, assuming the money is right.
Is Garoppolo a Good Fit for Las Vegas?
While Garoppolo is a capable signal-caller, it's an interesting decision to switch from Carr to him. Carr arguably has a greater ceiling, but head coach Josh McDaniels might be looking for someone who knows his system and can take care of the ball. Carr finished with 14 interceptions during the 2023 season (led the league before he was benched), while Garoppolo is known as a careful game manager.
Additionally, Garoppolo could serve as a bridge quarterback if Las Vegas opts to take a swing at QB in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Ultimately, Garoppolo is a good enough quarterback to distribute the ball to Davante Adams, Darren Waller, and Hunter Renfrow, but the ceiling of the overall offense, especially in the playoffs, would be limited.
