Orelvis Martinez Blasts First Homer Of Spring
2 years agoToronto Blue Jays shortstop prospect Orelvis Martinez went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer on Sunday versus the Philadelphia Phillies. Martinez, 21, has now gone 2-for-6 in a small sample size this spring. Traditionally a shortstop, Martinez suited up at third base and that could potentially be his long-term position with shortstop Bo Bichette locked up for the next three years and third baseman Matt Chapman due to enter free agency following the season. Martinez has been one of the Blue Jays top prospects since signing with the organization in 2019 and a consensus top-100 prospect during that span. Despite going yard for 30 homers and 76 RBI in 2022 for Double-A New Hampshire, Martinez hit a career low .203 in 433 at-bats. The power is certainly there for the youngster, but he must improve his plate discipline before being promoted to the show. There is the chance that Martinez makes his big-league debut in 2023, but he may need an injury to Bitchette or Chapman for that to come to fruition. For now, Martinez is an exciting name for managers in redraft leagues to keep an eye on, but his best value is in dynasty leagues where he should be universally rostered.
