The Houston Texans entered the 2022 season with low expectations. Yet, the team still found a way to underachieve.
Houston’s Week 1 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts ended in a 20-20 tie. They then only won one of their next 13 games. While the Texans were on their way to the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the coaching staff had other ideas.
Over the final three weeks of the year, the Texans won two games. Furthermore, their 32-31 Week 18 win over the Colts knocked them out of the No. 1 draft slot. After going 3-13-1 last year, Houston will have the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

What Are The Houston Texans Biggest Needs On Offense?
The Texans have a young offense outside of a few spots. However, their top need is at quarterback. Davis Mills isn’t the answer. More importantly, Houston could land a generational talent in April.
After losing the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Texans must make a deal with the Chicago Bears. However, Houston has the draft capital needed to make a deal work. Alabama’s Bryce Young is an elite prospect and a future superstar in the NFL. The star quarterback does an excellent job reading the field and quickly making decisions.
Young had over 8,300 passing yards and 80 touchdowns during his three years at Alabama. More importantly, pairing the quarterback with the team’s young but talented receiving core could quickly turn Houston’s offense around.
What Are The Houston Texans Biggest Needs On Defense?
Defensively the Texans have multiple needs. However, their top need is an edge rusher. Last year the team had only one player with more than five sacks. While Jerry Hughes had a team-high nine sacks last season, the veteran turns 35 years old during the offseason.
One potential draft target is Iowa’s Lukas Van Ness. The young edge rusher had 19 tackles for a loss and 13 sacks over the past two years. More importantly, he repeatedly dominated against NFL-level talent.
Van Ness could be an option for the Texans with their second first-round pick at 12th overall. They got this pick from the Cleveland Browns as part of the Deshaun Watson trade last offseason.
