Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams has had a solid NFL career. The veteran running back spent the first four years of his career with the Green Bay Packers.
After his four years in Green Bay, Williams signed a two-year deal with the Lions during the 2021 offseason. The veteran running back had 153 rushing attempts for 601 yards and three touchdowns in his first season in Detroit. However, he had a breakout year in 2022.
Over the first five years of his career, the veteran running back had 13 rushing touchdowns, never scoring more than four in a season. Williams then had a career-high 17 rushing touchdowns in 2022, leading the NFL in that category.

Will The Lions Re-Sign Jamaal Williams?
Not only did Williams lead the NFL in rushing touchdowns last year, but he also posted career highs in several categories. His 1,066 rushing yards were a career-high and nearly 500 more yards than his previous career-best. Furthermore, Williams averaged 15.4 rushing attempts per game last year. It was only the second time in his career that the veteran running back averaged double-digit rushing attempts per contest.
Furthermore, Williams played a critical role in Detroit’s 9-8 record. He was the team’s go-to player down near the goal line. More importantly, the veteran running back wants to stay with the Lions.
While nothing is written in stone until it’s official, fans should be surprised to see Williams playing anywhere else but Detroit next season.
Which Teams Could Sign Jamaal Williams This Offseason?
However, unexpected things happen all the time in the NFL. The Lions have D’Andre Swift and might not be willing to meet Williams’ asking price this offseason. If the veteran running back hits the open market, he will have plenty of options.
One potential landing spot is the Carolina Panthers. They recently hired Frank Reich as their new head coach. One of the additions to his coaching staff is running back coach Duce Staley. The former NFL running back turned coach has spent the past two years in Detroit with Williams.
Meanwhile, the Panthers traded Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers before the trade deadline, leaving them with D’Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard on the roster. However, Foreman is a free agent this offseason. Carolina could let him leave in free agency and sign Williams as his replacement.
