2 years agoThe San Diego Padres were set to open spring training with five starters -- Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell, Nick Martinez and Seth Lugo -- but they had a desire to use a six-man rotation after it was successful in the early stages of 2022. The Padres signed right-hander Michael Wacha on Tuesday, and he's expected to slot into what will be a six-man rotation to begin 2023, including Lugo and Martinez, who both have a track record of success in the bullpen. Opening the year with six starters will ease the burden on the entire staff as they get settled in. The 33-year-old Lugo hasn't made a start since 2020 and hasn't been a full-time starter since 2017, so workload restrictions should be expected eventually, and he'll have to pitch well if he wants to stick in the rotation.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
