Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke has bounced around the NFL during his limited career.
Heinicke started his career with the Houston Texans in 2017, throwing one pass that year. He joined the Carolina Panthers in 2018 when Ron Rivera was the head coach. That year Heinicke completed 35 of 57 pass attempts for 320 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.
After taking off the 2019 season, Heinicke returned in 2020 with the Commanders. It was Rivera’s first year in Washington. The former Old Dominion quarterback started the playoff matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, throwing for 306 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

Will The Commanders Re-Sign Taylor Heinicke?
Following his playoff performance, Washington brought Heinicke back for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Over the past two years, the veteran quarterback has completed 64% of his pass attempts for 5,278 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also threw 21 interceptions during that span.
Last year the Commanders added Carson Wentz, pushing Heinicke down the depth chart. However, a finger injury to Wentz in Week 6 opened the door for Heinicke to take back over as the starter. The former Old Dominion quarterback started nine games in 2022, throwing 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Earlier this week, Rivera said Sam Howell would be the team’s No. 1 quarterback heading into the offseason. With Heinicke set to hit the open market in March, his time in Washington is likely over.
Heinicke was on the Pat McAfee show on Thursday. While he wants to be a starter next year, the veteran quarterback isn't against the idea of being a backup again.
Which Team Could Sign Taylor Heinicke This Offseason?
Washington could re-sign Heinicke to be the backup for Howell. However, another potential landing spot is the Green Bay Packers. The veteran quarterback said he would love to play for his favorite team growing up.
If the Packers trade away Aaron Rodgers this offseason, Jordan Love will take over as the starting quarterback. While the team has expressed confidence in the former first-round pick, having a backup with starting experience would be ideal.
Heinicke is a good locker room guy and won’t challenge Love for the starting role. However, he is capable of starting if Love gets hurt or struggles.
