Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery was a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The former Iowa State star hit the NFL ground running.
Montgomery had a solid rookie year, totaling just under 900 rushing yards and six touchdowns. The following year, he had a breakout season. The former Iowa State star had a career-high 1,070 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in 2020.
Unfortunately, the former third-round pick has seen his production drop over the past two years. Since his career year in 2020, Montgomery has averaged 825 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns per season. Furthermore, he averaged only 3.9 yards per rushing attempt during that span.

Will The Bears Re-Sign David Montgomery?
The former Iowa State star is a free agent this offseason and is part of a deep class.
Unfortunately, that works against Montgomery. With more options on the market and an excellent draft class, teams can lowball Montgomery during negotiations. Meanwhile, the Bears haven’t closed the door on the veteran running back returning to the team next year. However, it will need to be at the right price.
Which Team Could Sign David Montgomery This Offseason?
If Montgomery doesn’t return to Chicago in 2023, there will be plenty of teams interest in the former third-round pick. Regardless of where he plays next year, some team will get a tough, physical runner in Montgomery.
While the former Iowa State star isn’t an elite NFL running back, Montgomery is a starting caliber player and would make for an excellent 1-2 punch for some team.
The best landing spot for Montgomery is the Miami Dolphins. Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson are free agents. If both leave, the former Iowa State star could have a featured role behind a solid run-blocking offensive line.
However, a more likely landing spot for Montgomery is the Kansas City Chiefs. Isiah Pacheco was the team’s top running back this year. However, the Chiefs should look at upgrading the position in the offseason.
Kansas City’s quarterbacks coach is Matt Nagy. He was the head coach in Chicago for the first three years of Montgomery’s career, making it possibly an easy selling point to bring the running back to Kansas City.
