Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz came into the 2022 season with a lot to prove and after a mostly disappointing season for the No. 2 overall pick, he could be released by the team this offseason.
Wentz has been in a different uniform for each of the last three seasons, spending a final year in Philadelphia before a one-year stint in Indianapolis. After the Colts traded a first-round pick for Wentz, they sold him, a second-round pick, and a seventh-round pick for second-round and third-round selections in the 2022 NFL Draft.
After another down season for the seventh-year signal-caller will he be released by Washington? Let's get into it.

Carson Wentz 2022 Season Review
In seven starts (eight games played) Wentz completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Wentz missed several games due to a finger injury and was benched for Taylor Heincke when he ultimately did return to full health. Wentz went 2-5 in games he started, while the Commanders went 6-3-1 in games he did not play in.
Ultimately, it was just more of the same from Wentz. He was selected to the All-Pro team in 2017 before suffering a major knee injury, but he hasn't returned to that elite level in the years since.
That said, Washington will have a decision to make this offseason, just a year after investing decent draft capital in him.
Will Carson Wentz Be Released By The Commanders?
Since, the Commanders could save over $26 million by cutting ties with Wentz, his release from the team is almost guaranteed. There's buzz that Sam Howell is fully expected to start under center for Washington next season, so Wentz has no place on the roster at his price tag.
The Commanders are a few pieces away from being a legitimate playoff contender, but it's clear Wentz isn't the guy who can get it done at quarterback. Whether the Howell rumors are true or Washington will look to upgrade its QB room in the 2023 NFL Draft, Wentz will likely be looking for a new home.
After three years on three teams, Wentz is probably headed to a backup role in 2023. Many quarterbacks have found themselves back in starting roles in their mid-30s, but Wentz has a low chance of being considered a locked-in starter ever again.
