Tyler Glasnow 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Injury History Offers Strong Risk/Reward Debate, Oblique Strain Sidelines Him Six-Eight Weeks
2 years agoWhen he's healthy and on his game, Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow (oblique) is one of the nastiest pitchers in baseball. The problem is the 29-year-old has maxed out at just 111 2/3 innings from the 2018 season, although he did stay healthy and started 11 games during the shortened 2020 season. His 2023 season is already on the rocks from a health standpoint as an oblique strain suffered in late February will keep him out of action for the next six-to-eight weeks. Glasnow has tossed just 94 2/3 innings over the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery and hurled just 6 2/3 frames in his two-start return before starting one postseason contest in 2022. That said, there's little doubt he's been among the league's most dominant starters when toeing the rubber in recent seasons. Among starting pitchers with at least 90 innings pitched over the last two seasons, Glasnow ranks third in K% (36.3%) and K-BB% (28.4%), tied for fifth in ERA (2.57), and ninth in FIP (2.79). With an ADP of 94, risk-averse owners have been hesitant to pull the trigger in his return from a lengthy injury. However, with Steamer projections of 28 starts, 31.4% K%, 30.8% K-BB%, 3.19 ERA, and 11 wins, Glasnow could be a steal to those willing to eat some risk on draft day despite a delayed start to his 2023 campaign.
