AJ Griffin is worth considering as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 6 of the 2022-23 NBA season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 1% of leagues
ANALYSIS: AJ Griffin was an All-ACC Freshman Team selection in his lone season as a Duke Blue Devil last year, and averaged 10.4 points shooting 44.7% from three and 79.2% from the FT line. The 6'6, 225-lb. prospect of New York state was drafted 16th overall in the 2022 draft by the Hawks for his upward trajectory, and that potential is already shining through 16 games of his NBA career.
He saw very few minutes until 11/7 against the Bucks when he played 31.5 minutes and went off for 24 points, four rebounds, and three steals with two makes from deep, and has now eclipsed 20 MP in each of Atlanta's last six games. In the last five games since 11/19 against Toronto, Griffin has averaged 13 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 11-29 (37.9%) on threes (8-14 in the middle three games), and overall he has sunk all seven of his free throw attempts on the year. Griffin ranks fifth for the Hawks in true shooting percentage (59.8%), fifth in OBPM (1.2), third in three-point attempt rate (51.8%), and is tied for first in steal rate (2.5%) with Dejounte Murray and Jalen Johnson. With the ability to fill the box score with microwave scoring, long-range accuracy, a few boards, and plenty of steals, AJ Griffin is an under-the-radar rookie addition for Fantasy Basketball Managers in deep formats.
