New York Jets WR Corey Davis missed Week 8’s game against the New England Patriots with a knee injury. Will he be back for Week 9, and should you start him?
Davis is second on the Jets in receiving yards and first in yards per reception amongst those with double-digit catches. He has had some big games. He torched the Browns for 83 yards and one touchdown in the Jets’ historic Week 2 comeback.
As of late, though, Davis has been falling off. Before missing Week 8, he had just four catches in the past three games he played. Can he return to the top-20/top-30 fantasy relevance he showed through the first four games of the season?
How Has Corey Davis Done This Year in Fantasy Football?
With 19 catches for 351 yards and two touchdowns, Davis is the WR50 in PPR, behind Alec Pierce and ahead of George Pickens, and the WR41 in standard scoring, just ahead of Romeo Doubs. He ranks higher in standard because he is a big play threat, so his yardage numbers are more impressive than his catch total.
Davis is the No. 26 WR when targeted at 20-yards or deeper but only the 35th-best WR on short routes. 25 of his 30 targets have been on routes of 10-yards or deeper. But if you look even at standard scoring, Davis hasn’t done much in the past four weeks.
From Week 5 to Week 7 (excluding Week 8, which he missed), Davis ranks as the WR72 in standard and the WR81 in PPR. He made just two catches for 38 yards in Week 5 against a Miami secondary that is far from scary and two catches for 52 yards in Week 6 against Green Bay, then he left Week 7 with his knee injury before making any catches.
Will Corey Davis Improve?
Corey Davis could continue to struggle. The Jets' offense has been poor since Zach Wilson returned from injury. They are averaging just 20.0 points in the past three games, which is in the bottom half of the league. For a TD-dependent receiver like Davis, that is troubling.
Wilson shows flashes. He can put together big yardage games like he did last week, but he threw reckless interceptions at critical moments, and the Jets only ended up scoring 17 points against the Patriots. Then Wilson also has real stinkers, like his 110 yards on 18 attempts in the Jets' win over the Packers. It is hard to know which Wilson you will get in which game and hence hard to trust his No. 2 WR.
Will Corey Davis Play In Week 9?
Jets coach Robert Saleh said that Davis is day-to-day. That’s not a good sign. In Week 8, he did not practice at all Wednesday through Friday, not even in a limited fashion. It should be expected that Davis probably won’t play unless his practice situation improves significantly.
In Week 9, the Jets take on the Bills, one of the elite defenses, so it’s not a good matchup for Davis anyway. He’ll have Week 10, the Jets’ bye week, to rest up, and then there’s a road game in Foxborough in Week 11.
