Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a thumb injury in Sunday’s 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prescott exited the game with about six minutes left in the fourth quarter.
While everyone hoped the injury was minor, Dak suffered a fractured thumb and reportedly will miss 6-8 weeks. It is the second time in the past three years that the Cowboys will be without their franchise quarterback for multiple games.
With Prescott out the next several weeks, what will the Cowboys do at quarterback? In 2020, the Cowboys started four quarterbacks, with Andy Dalton leading the way with 11. However, none of the backups are still with the team.
Who Will Be The Cowboys Starting QB With Dak Prescott Sidelined?
After Prescott left the game with the injury, Cooper Rush took over at quarterback. He completed seven of his 13 pass attempts for 64 yards while getting sacked twice. While he struggled, the Cowboys are confident in Rush as the starter with Prescott sidelined.
Last year, Rush started the Week 8 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings with Prescott sidelined because of a calf injury. The former Central Michigan quarterback completed 24 of his 40 pass attempts for 325 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 20-16 win.
Will the Dallas Cowboys Trade For A Quarterback?
The Cowboys are confident in Rush. While Dallas might feel that way, that hasn’t stopped the internet from starting trade rumors. The San Francisco 49ers have arguably the best backup quarterback in the NFL in Jimmy Garoppolo.
The 49ers are labeled a potential trade partner because of Garoppolo whenever a starting quarterback gets hurt. While no deal is reportedly in the works, that hasn’t stopped Kyle Shanahan from floating the idea of a trade between the 49ers and Cowboys.
Another possible trade target is the Pittsburgh Steelers' third-string quarterback Mason Rudolph. The former third-round pick from Oklahoma State was a possible trade target for the Cowboys in the preseason.
At this time, many believe the Cowboys will start Rush until Prescott can return from the injury. However, if Rush struggles, don’t be surprised if Jerry Jones pulls off a trade for Garoppolo or Rudolph.
