Nate Sudfeld Throws For 103 Yards, One TD In Preseason Opener
San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld completed 8-of-11 pass attempts with 103 yards and one touchdown in his preseason debut as a 49er. The fourth-year signal caller only attempted 37 passes in his three years in Philadelphia. He spent 2021 on the 49ers practice squad and was elevated to the active roster for one game but did not play a snap. His last action in a regular season game while filling in for Jalen Hurts in Week 17 of 2020. This year, he will be the backup for Trey Lance, assuming Jimmy Garoppolo is traded or cut. It was an encouraging performance for Sudfeld, who might be able to support San Francisco's receiving options should Lance miss any time.

Nate Sudfeld Picked Off In Loss To Giants
Nate Sudfeld completed just 13 of 24 passes for 96 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception during Thursday's preseason opener against the New York Giants. He also rushed three times for an additional 14 yards on the ground. The 30-year-old played most of the game, only ceding reps to Hendon Hooker (head) in the third quarter. (Hooker departed after two drives and entered concussion protocol, bringing Sudfeld back into the game.) Neither player led a touchdown drive, and while Hooker was quite impressive on the ground, his new injury could give Sudfeld the early advantage in the fight to be Jared Goff's backup. If Hooker is expected to miss time, Detroit could add another quarterback to compete with Sudfeld ahead of the 2024 campaign.

Nate Sudfeld Returning To Lions
Nate Sudfeld on Wednesday. The 30-year-old served as the backup to Jared Goff during the 2022 season. He was slated to compete with Teddy Bridgewater, but he has retired this offseason. That being said, Sudfeld figures to compete with Hendon Hooker for the backup job in Detroit next season. The former sixth-round pick has played in six games since debuting in 2017. Sudfeld won't offer any fantasy value heading into next season.

Nate Sudfeld Suffers Torn ACL
Nate Sudfeld (knee) suffered a torn ACL in the third quarter of the preseason finale on Friday night against the Carolina Panthers, according to sources. Sudfeld will now be forced to miss the entire 2023 season. It's a hit to Detroit's QB depth behind Jared Goff, especially with rookie Hendon Hooker (knee) taking a redshirt year in 2023. As things currently stand on Detroit's roster, Teddy Bridgewater will be Goff's primary backup, with only undrafted rookie Adrian Martinez behind him. The Lions will most likely add another body to the QB room before the start of the regular season in two weeks.

Nate Sudfeld Throws Lions Lone Touchdown
Nate Sudfeld completed nine of his 18 passing attempts for 80 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the preseason loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 29-year-old threw the team's only touchdown of the game. Sudfeld might be on the team's roster to begin the season after the NFL implemented a rule to allow teams to carry a third quarterback and go over 53 roster spots, but he might be released when Hendon Hooker (torn ACL) is cleared to practice and play.
