Rex Burkhead 2022 NFL Player Outlook:Jack-Of-All-Trades, But Don't Expect A 2021 Repeat
2 years agoHouston Texans running back Rex Burkhead racked up a career-high 613 yards from scrimmage in 2021. He rushed for 427 yards and three touchdowns while catching 25-of-32 targets for 186 yards across 16 games. Most of his stats last year came when he erupted for 149 rushing yards and two TDs against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16. Burkhead surprisingly saw an increased role the previous year. According to Houston general manager Nick Caserio, it is "more out of need than anything else." The Texans signed free agent running back Marlon Mack and drafted Dameon Pierce in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He will compete with Mack, Pierce, and holdover Royce Freeman for carries out of Houston's backfield this season. Burkhead is the highest-paid running back on the roster and is guaranteed $2.35 million in 2022. The veteran can handle snaps in any situation and should be on the field mainly during passing-down situations. However, fantasy managers can't expect Burkhead to repeat his volume from the second half of last year. The former New England Patriot is ranked 147th overall in the latest Rotoballer rankings with an FFPC ADP of 303. Burkhead could be a viable plug-in-play option if managers are in a jam during a bye week, but don't expect a repeat of last season.
