Garrett Whitlock Will Return As Reliever
2 years agoBoston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora confirmed that the team will use right-hander Garrett Whitlock (hip) in a relief role when he returns from the injured list. Whitlock, who had been in the starting rotation since April 23, will be used as a multi-inning reliever, similar to how he was used in his dominant rookie season last year. The 26-year-old threw a bullpen and did fielding drills at Wrigley Field on Saturday, and he'll likely face hitters at some point early next week and could begin a minor league rehab assignment after that. Whitlock will give Boston another good option alongside closer Tanner Houck and setup arms John Schreiber and Matt Strahm, but it will also be bad news for Whitlock's fantasy appeal. In the long term, Cora said the team still views Whitlock as a candidate to start, but he'll be a reliever for the rest of 2022.
