Jason Castro Contemplating Retirement After This Year
Jason Castro has told reporters he's considering retiring following the 2022 season, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Castro, 34, has played 11 seasons in the big leagues, amassing a .230/.315/.392 slash line with 96 HRs. He's been with the Astros for the majority of his career, playing in Houston for the first six seasons of his time in the league before returning in 2021. Last year, the veteran hit .235 with eight home runs, 22 runs, and 21 RBI across 66 games. He's projected to back up fellow backstop Martin Maldonado, so he won't be in line for a major increase in playing time. Thus, he won't have much of a fantasy impact, except possibly in AL-only leagues.

Jason Castro Could Consider Retirement
Jason Castro (knee), who underwent season-ending surgery on his left knee on July 26 to fix a torn meniscus, said he hasn't made a decision about his future after considering retirement in the spring after the 2022 season. "I'm non-weight-bearing for six weeks, so it's going to be difficult to kind of do much in that timetable, but once I'm back and able to be mobile and not be a burden and in the way, I'm going to be around as much as possible," Castro said. Before his injury, the 35-year-old was hitting just .115/.205/.179 with a homer, three RBI, six runs scored and one stolen base in 78 at-bats. If this is the end for Castro, he'll finish his major league career with a .227/.312/.387 slash line, 97 home runs, 325 RBI, 368 runs scored and six stolen bases in 12 seasons with the Astros, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres.

No Timetable For Michael Brantley, Jason Castro
Michael Brantley's (shoulder) or catcher Jason Castro's (knee) return with nine games remaining before the All-Star break. Brantley was eligible to come off the injured list last Friday, while Castro went on the IL on July 1 after tweaking his left knee on June 29. Brantley ran in the outfield on Friday but still isn't hitting. Castro will likely need a few extra days to recover after his 10 days on the IL are up. Manager Dusty Baker described Brantley's shoulder as being "slow to respond" and said the team won't rush him back. The 35-year-old was hitting .288 with 26 RBI and a .370 on-base percentage through 243 at-bats before his injury, but at this point, it's unlikely we'll see him until the start of the second half of the season.
