Jose Barrero Undergoes Surgery, Out Six Weeks
Jose Barrero (hand) had successful surgery on the hamate bone in his left hand and is expected to be out for six weeks. Barrero was hoping to compete for the starting job at shortstop to open the season, but that will now be Kyle Farmer's job early in 2022. The 23-year-old has hit just .197/.242/.248 with no home runs and five RBI in 124 plate appearances over his first 45 big-league games the last two years in Cincinnati, but he could earn some playing time at the 6 eventually over Farmer once he's fully healthy. Barrero can probably be ignored in shallow mixed leagues this season.

Jose Barrero Starting In Center Field
Jose Barrero is starting in center field and is hitting ninth in the batting order on Friday against the New York Yankees and right-hander Clarke Schmidt. With rookie Matt McLain taking over the 6 in Cincinnati, Barrero has to find other avenues for playing time with the Reds. The 25-year-old hasn't been much of a fantasy commodity through 32 games this year, and batting in the nine-hole makes him completely avoidable for fantasy lineups. Barrero enters Friday's contest against the Yanks with a .237 average (23-for-97) with seven doubles, one home run, 12 RBI, three stolen bases and 10 runs scored in 109 plate appearances.

Jose Barrero Leaves Monday's Game With Hamstring Tightness
Jose Barrero left his team's 7-6 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday with tightness in his right hamstring, according to the team. Barrero was pulled during the second inning after appearing to tweak his hamstring while running the bases following a leadoff single. He was replaced in the lineup by Jason Vosler, who went on to hit a three-run homer. Barrero can be considered day-to-day for the time being.

Jose Barrero Out Of The Lineup Again
Jose Barrero is out of the starting lineup for a second straight game on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Barrero is hitting just .160 (20-for-125) with two home runs, 10 RBI and three stolen bases in 35 games for the Reds this year, and he's also gone just 7-for-39 (.180) with 17 strikeouts in 11 games in the month of September. With Barrero out again on Friday, Kyle Farmer is starting at shortstop and batting third, while Spencer Steer will get the start at the hot corner and bat eighth against Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty. Donovan Solano is also starting at first base and batting fifth in the order.

Reds Recall Jose Barrero
Jose Barrero from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. One of the organization's most promising prospects, Barrero made his Major League debut for the Reds last season, hitting .200 with a .286 on-base percentage and a stolen base in 56 plate appearances. So far in 2022, the 24-year-old is batting .209 with a .262 on-base percentage, nine home runs, and five stolen bases for Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate. He's certainly a name to watch in dynasty leagues but is likely only an option for fantasy managers in deeper redraft leagues at the moment.
