New York Mets catcher James McCann (back) was scratched from the spring training game on Tuesday when his back tightened up. McCann missed time last year with back issues, but manager Buck Showalter said he would have played if it was a regular season game. It doesn't sound like the Mets believe the 31-year-old's injury is that serious, but we'll keep an eye on McCann through the rest of the week. In his first year in New York in 2021, McCann hit .232/.294/.349 with 10 home runs, 46 RBI and 29 runs in 412 plate appearances over 121 games. He was an All-Star in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, but McCann is currently ranked as RotoBaller's No. 23 fantasy backstop entering the 2022 season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and three total RBI on Tuesday as the O's beat the New York Mets 9-5. Serving primarily as the team's backup catcher, McCann has had an up-and-down season in 2024 after dealing with multiple injuries (left ankle and oblique sprains). In 53 games (168 at-bats), he is slashing .226/.277/.339 with four homers and 19 RBI. At this point in the season, McCann does not have much fantasy value – he may only possibly serve as a streamer in deep leagues.--Jake Kleiner - RotoBaller

Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde (nose) said that the team suspects that catcher James McCann (nose) suffered a broken nose in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Monday against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays. McCann is going for a CT scan. The 34-year-old backup catcher was hit in the face by a pitch from right-hander Yariel Rodriguez in the first inning on Monday and was bleeding quite a bit from his nose. He surprisingly stayed in for the entire game and finished the contest 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. However, if his CT scan confirms what the Orioles think, McCann will likely go on the 10-day injured list. If McCann goes on the IL, the O's could bring up Blake Hunt to serve as Adley Rutschman's backup. McCann entered the day with a .216 average (30-for-139) with just three homers and 14 RBI in 2024 in limited playing time.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann (hand) is back behind the plate doing the catching and is hitting sixth for the Orioles against the visiting Colorado Rockies and left-hander Kyle Freeland on Friday. McCann will return to action after missing the team's last few games due to a bruised left hand. The 33-year-old veteran backstop has done very little in just 151 at-bats in his first season in Baltimore, but he is hitting a strong .375 (18-for-48) with a home run, seven doubles, 13 RBI, two stolen bases and nine runs scored in 16 games (15 starts) since the All-Star break. Although three of McCann's four home runs on the year have come against left-handed pitching, he's gone just 19-for-88 (.216) against southpaw in 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann (oblique) missed the final seven games of spring training after feeling soreness in his left oblique in a March 20 Grapefruit League game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 32-year-old backstop called the injury "minor," but general manager Mike Elias said it's "likely" that McCann will begin the 2023 season on the injured list. He spent almost a month on the injured list last year with the New York Mets with a left oblique strain, although he said his current soreness is on the same side but in a different area. McCann will be backing up young catcher Adley Rutschman when he's healthy, and Anthony Bemboom should serve as Baltimore's backup to open the season with McCann on the shelf.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
