The Seattle Seahawks were the biggest surprise of the 2022 season. Many expected the team to struggle after trading away Russell Wilson last offseason. Instead, the Seahawks made the playoffs.
While the San Francisco 49ers won the NFC West division, Seattle ended the year with a 9-8 record and secured a Wild Card spot. More importantly, the team didn’t struggle without their former franchise quarterback.
Geno Smith had a breakout season. The veteran quarterback led the NFL in completion percentage (69.8%) and fourth in passing touchdowns (30). Smith had only 34 career passing touchdowns before the 2022 season.

What Are The Seattle Seahawks Biggest Needs On Offense?
After his career year, the Seahawks recently signed Smith to a three-year deal worth $105 million. Seattle has put together an excellent offense over the past few years. Last year they drafted two bookend offensive tackles, Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas. Furthermore, the Seahawks hit a home run with the selection of Kenneth Walker III.
While the team signed Smith to a contract extension, that won’t keep them from drafting a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Seattle rarely picks this high in the draft and must take advantage of the situation. Furthermore, the Seahawks can move on from Smith after the 2023 season if the veteran quarterback regresses.
One potential draft target is Anthony Richardson. The Florida quarterback is a raw prospect. However, he has elite physical tools and tremendous upside. Ideally, Richardson can spend a year learning from the bench like Patrick Mahomes did with the Kansas City Chiefs. Hypothetically, Seattle can release Smith after next season, making Richardson the starter in 2024.
What Are The Seattle Seahawks Biggest Needs On Defense?
While the Seahawks lack a superstar player on defense, the unit played well last season. More importantly, the team hit a home run with the fifth-round selection of Tariq Woolen. He made the Pro Bowl as a rookie after leading the NFL with six interceptions. Furthermore, Coby Bryant was a fourth-round pick last year and had a productive rookie season.
However, the Seahawks could use some help on the defensive line, as they have a couple of upcoming free agents. One potential draft target is Calijah Kancey. The former Pittsburgh star had 7.5 sacks last year, a career-high. More importantly, he ran a historic 4.67 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.
