2021 NFL Mock Draft for 7 Rounds - Version 16.0

Major trades have occurred since our last version with San Francisco, Miami and Philadelphia all making major deals and moving around in the first round.

**I am updating the mock draft very frequently as I have in years past. There are 50-60 factors I look at in determining updates. Everything from free agent signings, team releases, new coaching staffs, player workouts, all the way down to the agents representing players are considered.**

Follow the latest NFL Draft news and rookie breakdowns all offseason long at our NFL homepage.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2024:

Round 1 - NFL Mock Draft

This first published on March 12th, 2021. Stay tuned for updates and more NFL Draft coverage.

1. Jacksonville - Trevor Lawrence (QB, Clemson)
With the heightened quarterback activity, Lawrence going #1 is still a sure bet.

So what is it that ails the Jacksonville offense? The answer is everything. Trevor Lawrence is being dubbed as the “can’t-miss prospect” at quarterback, probably the highest-rated signal caller coming out of college since Andrew Luck in 2012. When you think about Jacksonville Jaguar quarterbacks you think of Mark Brunell and then you struggle and come up with a few random names from the last 15 seasons.

Jacksonville needs to put fans in the seats, grabbing the top quarterback prospect is one way to do that. The Gardner Minshew run was nice but I think we all knew it wasn't going to last.

2. NY Jets - Zach Wilson (QB, BYU)
Looks like the Sam Darnold deal has put this pick into perspective. It's a virtual lock at this point unless the Jets have a change of heart and suddenly value Justin Fields more. I don't see that happening at this stage even if there are legitimate questions about both prospects...and there are.

3. San Francisco - Justin Fields (QB, Ohio State)
San Francisco is #3 overall and Zach Wilson is seemingly out of the running at the spot. Justin Field is the thought here to be the pick but it is not yet set in stone. There is talk that perhaps Mac Jones is the pick here in an upset. Fields has another Pro Day next week and his speed was jaw-dropping during his first. We have Fields as the pick but it is written in pencil.

4. Atlanta - Kyle Pitts (TE, Florida)
The Atlanta Falcons are now THE team to watch in the top five and they control the flow of the draft. With quarterbacks now seemingly being slotted for the top three picks this looks to be the spot where we see the first player outside of quarterback selected. This comes down between Pitts and Micah Parsons. Penei Sewell remains the best player available on the board but Atlanta seems satisfied with Jake Matthews and Kaleb McGary manning the ends.

5. Cincinnati - Penei Sewell (OT, Oregon)
Want justification for this pick? Look no further than November 22, 2020. Joe Burrow in the midst of a record-setting rookie campaign has his knee shredded with a full ACL and MCL tear while suffering a partial PCL tear. Burrow should make his way back onto the football field this season and when he does give him the best tackle available. Cincinnati has holes all over the roster and both lines are where most of these holes are evident.

6. Miami - Ja'Marr Chase (WR, LSU)
Miami gets to acquire more draft capital while only moving down three positions. While the Dolphins do indeed move down they can still acquire the position they are truly targeting - wide receiver. Chase was the top receiver in this class when the season began and he sat out due to the pandemic. The Heisman campaign of DeVonta Smith may have some Dolphin fans wanting him but Chase is still the player most teams covet at the position. Both are extremely productive but the smaller frame of Smith is worrisome to more than one franchise.

7. Detroit - Jaylen Waddle (WR, Alabama)
Detroit was a hard team to read when the offseason began but the tea leaves have come into focus. Never mind the fact that Jared Goff is the new quarterback, Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones are both gone. Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams are technically the starters right now which is an alarming downgrade. We choose Waddle over Smith due to his frame and the fact that he may be the better of the two receivers. Yes, Smith won the Heisman but Waddle was getting more work earlier on before his injury. There is no question that the amazing campaign displayed by DeVaonta Smith was aided by Jaylen Waddle being on the sideline.

8. Carolina - Rashawn Slater (OT, Northwestern)
We were not surprised that the Panthers made a move for a quarterback as we have chronicled the team's desire to move on from Teddy Bridgewater. We were not surprised that Sam Darnold will be getting another chance for a new organization. We were surprised that this is where the two factors would intersect. This new development means Carolina can go after a franchise player along the offensive line to serve as the anchor. Micah Parsons is the other possibility but after a draft where there Panthers went entirely on defense, it will be time to even the score.

9. Denver - Micah Parsons (LB, Penn State)
It's a sign of the times for today's NFL that at pick #9 we finally have a defensive player being chosen. We had mocked Parsons here for some time then leaned towards the selection being a cornerback. Now that Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller are in tow via free agency we can go back to Parsons being the selection at #9. Would the Broncos have the guts to make another play for a quarterback at #9? Stranger things have happened I guess, the possibility remains after so many failed experiments at quarterback.

10. Dallas - Patrick Surtain II (CB, Alabama)
Roll Tide becomes the rallying call as Surtain goes at #10 meaning two Crimson Tide players are selected in the top 10. The injury news concerning Caleb Farley is what lands Surtain here although we are convinced Surtain is the better player at this point in his career. Surtain is a sure tackler and a better all-around player without the enormous ceiling players like Farley or even South Carolina product Jaycee Horn has.

11. New York Giants - Jaycee Horn (CB, South Carolina)
Kenny Golladay was a great get for the Giants but it does not necessarily preclude from the Giants looking away from wide receivers in Round 1. In this scenario, DeVonta Smith is still available but we have the Giants trying to guard the receivers with a stud cornerback. After the DeAndre Baker debacle, the Giants are in need of someone to play opposite James Bradberry.

12. Philadelphia - DeVonta Smith (WR, Alabama)
The trade back to #12 left many fans in Philadelphia wanting blood or the head of GM Howie Roseman. Our question is why? Philadelphia acquired the Dolphins' first-round pick for next season. The Eagles also have the Colts second-round pick for 2022 that escalates into a first-rounder if Carson Wentz plays 75% of the snaps in Indianapolis. The Eagles now are staring at a real possibility of having three first-round selections for 2022. This also seems to be a vote of confidence or Jalen Hurts moving forward. Cornerback is a huge hole but the Eagles will likely add a veteran that is cut from a team or make a trade for an experienced presence.

13. LA Chargers - Christian Darrisaw (OT, Virginia Tech)
With Penei Sewell being talked about all year and the versatility of Northwestern product Rashawn Slater on display, Christian Darrisaw has become the forgotten top prospect at offensive tackle. He is forgotten to the draftnik community, not NFL war rooms. Darrisaw may have helped his cause more than any other prospect at any position in our strange 2020 season. Darrisaw has been a starter since his freshman season and his progression has been fun to watch. Darrisaw looks like the real deal and a franchise left tackle, something your NFL Offensive ROY at quarterback will appreciate.

14. Minnesota - Gregory Rousseau (DE, Miami)
It looks like the Vikings will be making a choice along the line at #14. The question is whether the pick will be along the offensive line or the defensive line. Here we go with the best player available and with no edge rushers off the board the choice became an easy one.

15. New England - Trey Lance (QB, North Dakota State)
Lance looks to be a great fit in New England, especially if he gets to learn from Cam Newton. Newton is a quarterback who relies greatly on his legs and Lance learning the game from him would be beneficial. Mac Jones remains a possibility here and if Lance is gone Jones would be the logical selection.

16. Arizona - Travis Etienne (RB, Clemson)
Running back does not immediately come to mind when you think about where Arizona needs the most help but with Kenyan Drake on the move it would be good to have another weapon with Chase Edmonds. This may be a bit of a luxury pick but the Cardinals are all about winning right now and this would get the league's attention.

17. Las Vegas - Samuel Cosmi (OT, Texas)
The Raiders cut a host of quality offensive linemen and a number should still be on the board when the time comes for their first selection. Cosmi has a very impressive Pro Day and raised his stock significantly. There were a few teams questioning his athleticism and those concerns should have been erased with his impressive showing. Don't be surprised if Creed Humphrey is the choice at center although #17 would be a bit of a reach.

18. Miami - Jaelan Phillips (DE, Miami)
The Dolphins need to put pressure on the quarterback and the top two edge-rushing prospects are from the University of Miami, which seems like a natural match. We have been mocking a running back here but we now have Etienne going at #16 and the need for an edge rusher just supersedes going for Najee Harris. This defense is very good but they are close to being elite.

19. Washington - Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (LB, Notre Dame)
The WFT have built their defensive line into one of the most dominating units in the NFL. It's time for Washington to show the same care to the offensive line. The offensive line will be the focus along with another quarterback if Washington does not make a move in free agency. With that said the best player still on the board here would be Owusu-Koramoah since the Redskins have a weakness at the linebacker position in general. Washington drafts the best player available and looks to target specific positions a little later.

20. Chicago - Mac Jones (QB, Alabama)
Andy Dalton signing in Chicago to be the starter was a move that many didn't see coming. Just because Dalton is there don't think the Bears won't be looking for a quarterback, even if they need to move up to ensure they get one. This team has the talent on the roster to make a playoff run as long as the play at quarterback is steady.

21. Indianapolis - Alijah Vera-Tucker (OG, USC)
Vera-Tucker is someone we have listed as a guard though he can slide outside and play tackle. Indianapolis has a need to fill both positions so a player with the versatility of Vera-Tucker is very attractive. Wyatt Davis from Ohio State was once thought to be the first OG off the board but that is no longer with Vera-Tucker ascending up the boards with his versatile play.

22. Tennessee - Azeez Ojulari (DE, Georgia)
The Titans paid dearly down the stretch when they couldn't get pressure on the quarterback. The signing of Jadeveon Clowney was a colossal bust and he may be moved after only a year in Tennessee. Ojulari is a young talent who has plenty of upside. We could see a player like Alex Leatherwood here, after Isaiah Wilson was dealt to Miami (and subsequently released).

23. NY Jets - Najee Harris (RB, Alabama)
When your team finishes 31st in total offense grabbing a new quarterback and a running back in the first round seems like an important investment and upgrade. Le’Veon Bell in New York was a nightmare and who is the starter right now after the Bell departure? Do you resign Frank Gore, the only man who cashes game checks and Social Security checks simultaneously? Frank Gore is an age-defying beast but he isn’t a runner your franchise should be counting on. Harris also seems to have the temperament and maturity to handle the spotlight in New York, a city that has chewed and spit out great athletes in the past. If Travis Etienne is still on the board you better believe the Jets turn in that card lickety-split. Najee Harris is on the same level and would ease the pressure on a rookie quarterback.

24. Pittsburgh - Caleb Farley CB Virginia Tech
Drafting a cornerback makes the most sense for the Steelers although they have shied away from drafting secondary help early in the draft process. Feels like the STeelers could capitalize on drafting Farley who many feel is the most talented cornerback in this draft. Injury concerns will push him down the board but it looking more and more likely that he will not make it to Round 2.

25. Jacksonville - Rashod Bateman (WR, Minnesota) Jacksonville can look in a number of directions here as we have it narrowed down to wide receiver, offensive tackle and cornerback. We have Rashod Bateman here due to the fact that he had such an impressive Pro Day and he is moving up the boards. Rondale Moore would also be a fit as Jacksonville could use a slot receiver but we are going with the best overall prospect at wideout.

26. Cleveland - Nick Bolton (LB, Missouri)
Nick Bolton is in a great position as there are multiple teams that would love his services from the mid-20s overall through the end of the first round. This means Bolton will likely be suiting up with a playoff-caliber team and seeing a lot of playing time. With such strong demand, we could see a team trade up in order to secure Bolton's services. Cleveland could always go the way of an edge rusher if Bolton is not available when they are on the clock.

27. Baltimore - Alex Leatherwood (OT, Alabama)
The injury to Ronnie Stanley showed the Ravens have some depth issues along the line once the stars go down. There could be a play for another receiver as they keep adding toys to the cupboard for Lamar Jackson. Wide receiver or adding a pass-rushing threat along the edge after the loss of Matthew Judon.

28. New Orleans - Trevon Moehrig (S, TCU)
Malcolm Jenkins retired to New Orleans last season after six very successful campaigns in Philadelphia. Jenkins has been one of the league's best for years at playing a hybrid safety/linebacker role. Moehrig is the best player with those skills in this draft class. New Orleans starts to groom the heir apparent if Moehrig is still on the board.

29. Green Bay - Rondale Moore (WR, Purdue)
Players along the offensive and defensive lines make more sense but remember last year and Jordan Love? This isn’t a team that drafts for a position, the Packers have long utilized the best player available approach. Getting Rondale Moore would qualify as a steal for the Packers and would justify a first-round selection on a wide receiver.

30. Buffalo - Wyatt Davis (OG, Ohio State)
Buffalo is going to be a sexy pick to win the AFC next season, I can feel it already. The Bills know they need more balance with the offense if they want to get to the next level. Devin Singletary and Zack Moss will be trusted to tote the ball but upgrading the interior of the offensive line should be viewed as the most important area for Buffalo to improve going into 2021.

31. Kansas City - Jalen Mayfield (OT, Michigan)
Hard to think of the Chiefs needing anything other than offensive line help after watching the Super Bowl. This is a deep draft for offensive linemen and there is a chance that maybe someone slips to Kansas City they are enamored with. This may be a bit of a reach for Mayfield but after parting ways with Eric Fisher and Mitchell Swartz the writing is on the wall.

32. Tampa Bay - Daviyon Nixon (DT, Iowa)
Daviyon Nixon will bring that Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year swagger to the Buccaneers. Nixon is an unpolished gem at defensive tackle and he is just starting to come into his own. Nixon posted 13.5 tackles for loss, adding 5.5 sacks as one of the most disruptive defensive forces in the Big Ten. Nixon is still raw but a system like Tampa Bay would welcome his talents. I would expect the pick to be at linebacker or an edge rusher if the interior isn’t addressed in the first round.
