BALLER MOVE: Target as High-End CA2
ANALYSIS: Despite the pedigree of a top prospect and nearly 90 games of experience at the major league level, Yasmani Grandal disappointed in 2014, batting an anemic .225/.327/.401 with 49 RBI and 47 runs scored through 128 games. Some have written him off as a bust, but Grandal’s rare combination of power and plate discipline for a catcher could make him an interesting player on draft day.
Grandal clubbed 15 HR last year, the 8th highest among catchers in the majors, and posted a 13.3% walk rate, which ranked second among catcher with at least 400 plate appearances. All of this despite coming off of an ACL tear in July 2013. The underlying skill-set that allowed Grandal to post a triple-slash line of .310/.408/.487 for his minor league career didn’t vanish overnight. Additionally, the Dodgers didn't trade Matt Kemp for a backup catcher. Grandal is surrounded by great players who should offer him plenty of RBI and run-scoring opportunities.
Grandal offers an attractive package on draft day. He has the potential to be an impact player for fantasy owners, delivering a blend of power and average that is hard to find outside the elite catchers.
