One and Done Selections - The PGA Championship
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Joe Idone, Matt Miller, Byron Lindeque, and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Brooks Koepka
Soooo close with Xander last week and we’ll look to stay hot at the year’s second major championship. I expect Rory McIlroy to be a popular pick this week, but I’m forced to go looking for other options with him no longer available to me and I’ll happily “settle” for Brooks Koepka.
2024 hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for Koepka, as he kicked off the year in sluggish form before a ghost-like performance at the Masters. However, as we've seen him do so many times before, Koepka heads to a major championship with his game suddenly peaking at just the right time, as he heads to Valhalla fresh off a win in Singapore in his most recent LIV start.
With his form seemingly intact and an undeniable major championship pedigree, the course fit at Valhalla should also be perfectly suited to his strengths. A five-time major champion, he's won those titles at Erin Hills, Shinnecock, Bellerive, Bethpage, and Oak Hill - many of which share striking similarities with this week's classical behemoth that awaits at Valhalla.

Spencer Aguiar - Jon Rahm
Alternate - Brooks Koepka
This decision is extremely close between Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, but I am going to pivot in the direction of Rahm to try and be unique in this contest.
Every golfer who moves to LIV experiences a certain negative trajectory movement at some point. We see that here for Rahm, a name that was 8/1 to capture the PGA Championship last year, 12/1 at the Masters this season but has now jumped into this juiced-up price zone after failing to realize his long-term production after one shaky start at the Masters.
All of that is making him this out-of-sight, out-of-mind sort of commodity for the week. However, Rahm's first-place rank for projected ball striking at Valhalla generated a profile that has unjustifiably received the LIV price modification we have gotten for every player at some point during their move. It just so happens to be his turn right now, which has created one of the best values on the board for all contests.

Byron Lindeque -
Shout out to Xander who cashed in 2nd place money at a signature event, but somehow still let all the slappies who played a chalk Rory at Quail, get away with it. He refuses to assert himself as the alpha in the final grouping. A lot of people are saying that he wouldn’t have been able to beat Rory the way Rory played, but Xander made more bogeys on his back 9 on Sunday than he did all week through Saturday. He leads the tour in three putt avoidance (0.97%) prior to his three jab on Sunday. NOTHING Xander did on that back 9 made life difficult for Rory. Maybe if Xander showed some fight and ferocity in the heat of battle, he would have governed Rory’s confidence to a level that was beatable. Instead his two early bogeys gave Rory all he needed to grab his fourth “Quail Qrown” while Xander, for the second time in 53 weeks, was nowhere near the eventual winner or third place. A lonely runner up, again….
Yikes! Anyway! If there is somebody who has the skill set to match Rory. If there is somebody who has the power and the precision on the greens to grab another major title at a golf course with thick rough. If there is another golfer who doesn’t know what it's like to run into the buzzsaw that is Scottie Scheffler, it’s Bryson DeChambeau! Utilizing LIV golfers would appear to be the optimal strategy at majors, as you can then burn the other studs at signature events. We did that with Brooks last major and it was a mess. Hopefully Bryson can LIV up to his billing as the bomber to beat them all!
