Mets, Edwin Diaz Reach Agreement On Five-Year Deal
2 years agoThe New York Mets and closer Edwin Diaz agreed to a five-year, $102 million deal on Sunday, pending a physical. His $102 million deal is a new record for a relief pitcher, beating Aroldis Chapman's $86 million deal with the New York Yankees. Diaz will receive a $12 million signing bonus and an opt-out clause after three years of the deal. The contract also includes a full no-trade clause through the opt-out year. The 28-year-old hard-throwing right-hander is deserving of the deal, as he was one of the most dominant relief pitchers in 2022, posting a career-low 1.31 ERA (0.90 FIP), a 0.84 WHIP, 32 saves and 118 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched. On a Mets team that should be very good again in 2023, Diaz will be a high-end fantasy closer in 2023 yet again.
