Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The Arizona Diamondbacks Designating Shortstop Nick Ahmed For Assignment
The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly designating veteran shortstop Nick Ahmed for assignment, according to a tweet from The Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro on Wednesday afternoon. Piecoro tweeted the following:
The Diamondbacks later announced the roster move on Thursday in a tweet from the club’s official account:
The 33-year-old Ahmed has spent his entire Major League Baseball career to date with Arizona, batting .234 with a .288 on-base percentage, 70 home runs, 41 stolen bases, a .285 wOBA, and a 73 wRC+ in 3,163 plate appearances.
In 210 plate appearances this season, the former second-round pick hit .212 with a .257 on-base percentage for the Diamondbacks. He also added a pair of home runs and five stolen bases in the process while driving in 17 runs and scoring 14.
Ahmed logged just a .264 xwOBA on the season. Hitting seventh and eighth in Arizona's lineup for most of the year certainly didn’t help his fantasy chances for racking up counting stats like runs scored and RBI.
As evidenced by a 119.9 Def and a 12.5 fWAR, the infielder has generally made more of an impact in the field than at the plate.
With the aforementioned .264 xwOBA, a .323 xwOBAcon, a 31.5% hard-hit rate, and a 2.7% barrel rate this season, fantasy managers are probably better off looking elsewhere for streaming options at the shortstop position if Ahmed joins another club between now and the end of the regular season.
