BALLER MOVE: Add in All Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 48% of leagues
ANALYSIS: Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Carlos Rodon had a fantastic 2021 debut outing this past Monday against the Seattle Mariners. He pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out nine.
Rodon showed a significant velocity increase on Monday. The average velocity on his primary pitch, his four-seam fastball, was 95.4 mph. Last year, he averaged only 92.8 mph on the pitch. He also had great results from his slider, which generated a whiff rate of 72.7% on Monday. The average velocity for his slider was 85.2 mph, up from 83.4 mph last year. Eric Samulski broke him down in detail here.
Rodon has been an extremely inconsistent pitcher throughout the bulk of his career. The last two years have been his worst seasons. He had a 5.19 ERA over seven starts in 2019 and an 8.22 ERA over four games (two starts) in 2020. However, this year's debut might suggest he's found another level to tap into. He's worth a speculative add in all leagues in case he has a breakout year ahead. He is a two-start pitcher for Week 3. He'll face two favorable matchups against the Cleveland Indians on Monday and the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.
