In an extremely unfortunate turn of events, it has been announced that the Mets' 24-year-old starting pitcher Zack Wheeler will miss the entire 2015 season. According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Wheeler has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow which will most likely lead to Tommy John surgery.
This is a huge loss for the Mets who had high expectations coming into the season with young flamethrowers Wheeler, Matt Harvey, Jacob DeGrom, and Noah Syndergaard waiting in the wings. Wheeler had a nice season last year with a 3.54 ERA and averaging just over one strikeout per inning.
The loss of Wheeler means one of last year's starters, Dillon Gee, will most likely jump back into the rotation. Gee made 22 starts for the Mets last season, but had an underwhelming 94 strikeouts in 137.1 innings, with a 4.00 ERA.
With Wheeler's injury, the Mets have been hit with yet another bad break to their young high profiled pitching staff. Harvey was sidelined with this exact same injury near the end of the 2013 season, and is just getting poised to make his comeback. The Mets have already done a great job developing the three young MLB-ready pitchers up to this point, along with prospect Noah Syndergaard as another top developing talent, so now they just need to try and keep them all healthy.
