BALLER MOVE: Add in Two Catcher Leagues
ANALYSIS: Last year Yan Gomes was so good with the bat that the Indians felt comfortable moving Carlos Santana from behind the plate this year to make room for Gomes. Unfortunately, so far this year Gomes has responded by hitting .267/.311/.421 which is no better than OK for a backstop. He does already have 9 home runs as compared to last years 11 but he is only 60 at-bats away from reaching last year's total. Gomes didn't do much in his minor league history besides occasionally hit for average as well as hit for some power, and nothing about the underlying numbers suggest a major turnaround is coming. However, he's been swinging a hot stick recently, with 2 HR, 7 RBI and 6 Runs over his past 6 games, so he's worth adding in the short term. It's also clear the Indians management thought they saw something in Gomes. I'm not willing to bet my expertise against a professional MLB staff, so it's possible there are things about Gomes that can't be seen in the numbers. He does also offer some pop as previously stated, which is always nice for those of you looking for catchers in deep leagues. For the long term, I'd stay away from him in shallow leagues unless your format uses two catchers, or in very deep (16-team) leagues, and even then there might be better options.
