Week 10 Waiver Wire: Catchers

We're now 10 weeks into the season and the state of catching still leaves a lot to be desired. As of this writing, there still has not been a catcher to crack the 10-homer mark and the top mark of 32 RBIs was 23 behind the Major League leader. One of the main reasons I think there's such a drop-off in production is that teams are mostly centered around pitching, especially gearing towards the later innings. Waves of flamethrowers come in to lock down the game for the starters, who also tend to throw hard. Not many Jamie Moyer-types around anymore. So imagine catching a full game, getting pounded by foul tips, etc., and then you have to go up in the eighth inning to see Aroldis Chapman throwing pitches around 100-mph from an arm angle that makes it seem to come out of his ear? Yeah. No. Then again, it could just be Leap Year Madness and things will return to normal in 2017.

Our cut-off is sub-70% ownership in Fleaflicker leagues. Why higher than before? Because the catching ranks are so thin that the bar needs to be raised. It's like doing Limbo for kids! "Aww... you can't go down that low? We'll make it higher."

Week 10 Waiver Wire Catchers

J.T. Realmuto (MIA) 66% - His ownership numbers should still be much higher for someone who has a .298 average and three stolen bases. The Marlins catcher is also third among all backstops with 56 hits. The only real drawback is that he has no power. He hit his only two homers in April and nothing since. He should be owned by at least 80%. Realmuto has been hitting fairly well in June, getting at least a hit in all but two games entering Wednesday's action.

Francisco Cervelli (PIT) 63% - I know that I'm being almost Bernie Sanders-like in my obstinance in not taking Cervelli off my list. Yes, he's slumped horribly since a hot April, but he's still a lot better than many of the other options out there, many of whom are hitting well below .200 and still have jobs. He did sit out four games in June and hasn't actually collected a hit this month, but there has to be a rebound. He's too good to keep going like this. He's staying on this list.

Chris Herrmann (ARI) 25% - You'll see the divide here is vast, especially with catchers. The amount of catchers between 63% and 25% is surprisingly small (five). Herrmann has slumped a bit, having only three hits this month - all of them in one game. He's still hitting well enough at .287 to give Welington Castillo competition for starting time. He can help you.

Tommy Joseph (PHI) 4% - Fleaflicker still lists him as a C/1B, so why not take advantage of that designation? You can get first base production at catcher. Why not? Every little bit helps, especially in a two-catcher league. Looking for catchers in those leagues must feel like trekking through a desert with only several drops of water left in your canteen. Let Joseph refresh you some with his .311 average. He's had four two-hit games in June alone. Grab him.

Derek Norris (SD) 33% - He's had an uptick in ownership with a hot start to June that's seen him club two homers. He's also had three multi-hit games this month and only gone hitless once. Yes, his average is still a little on the sickly side at .208, but it's a vast improvement over where he's been. Plus his awesome beard has been missed in this section. It's not on the level of Dallas Keuchel's but it's still a very impressive one. Your two-catcher league needs his beard.

Bobby Wilson (TEX) 2% - As mention above, beggars can't really be choosers when it comes to the two-catcher format. Wilson has had a fairly good season, hitting .284. He did have a group of DNP's in late May, but he's still a good option for those who are looking for help. Let's face it, many of these catchers are a roll of the dice this season. Might as well roll them on him for now.
