Pittsburgh Pirates GM Neil Huntington recently said it’s “extremely doubtful” top pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow begins 2016 in the big leagues. Having dominated the minor league competition since being drafted in 2012, the right-handed starter has posted a 2.15 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 402.2 innings of work. His 11.8 K/9 is supported by a fastball that sits comfortably in the mid to upper 90s.
The lone knock against the 6’7" behemoth is his tendency to issue walks. Maintaining an unsightly 4.2 BB/9 throughout the minors, Glasnow will need to fine-tune his command if he wants to reach his potential. Although he boasted an impressive 2.7 BB/9 during his 12 starts with AA Altoona in 2015, Glasnow reverted to a 4.8 BB/9 after his promotion to AAA Indianapolis. Despite the free passes, Glasnow boasted a sparkling 2.20 ERA in his eight AAA starts.
Currently ranked the #10 MLB prospect by MLB.com, Glasnow has not surpassed the 143 innings he tallied in 2014. He will likely be on an innings limit this year, but his ability to accumulate strikeouts makes him an interesting stash option and a must-add upon his promotion to the majors.
