Analysis: The Pirates are still winning, and Mark Melancon has been in Washington for a couple weeks. That means Tony Watson gets to cash in on all of the late inning, high leverage situations. The 2014 All-Star has a 2.79 ERA and 1.03 WHIP so far in 48.1 IP in the 2016 season. Watson had a particularly bad month in June with a 5.56 ERA, but he followed it up with a July of 0.79 for ERA and 1.24 for WHIP in 11.1 IP, which earned him the Pirate closer spot once Mark Melancon left it vacant. He has earned three saves in his last four appearances in August, and with the Pirates holding a record of 56-55, it looks like Watson will have plenty of save opportunities moving forward. With his track record of consistent success, that makes him an essential piece for every bullpen closing down the 2016 season.
