Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers will host the Seattle Seahawks in Thursday night's matchup. The two teams have exchanged words in the past and are seen as bitter rivals, so this matchup is always an exciting one to watch.
A big story to keep an eye on is how Kaepernick performs against the Seahawks defense. If history tells us anything, it's that Kaepernick struggles against this vaunted secondary and pass rush. In two games vs the Seahawks last season, Kapernick threw for a pitiful 262 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions. He also had an average QBR of 59, and the 49ers lost both games by a combined 26 points.
Kapernick's struggles don't bode well for his wide receivers, either. In two games against the Seahawks last season, Anquan Boldin posted the severely underwhelming stat-line of five receptions for 41 yards and zero touchdowns. To make things worse, Boldin will likely be dealing with star cornerback Richard Sherman for most of the night. Sherman is known for shutting down number one wide receivers, and he's done so against bigger and faster wide receivers than Boldin.
While this season is a different story in terms of how well the Seahawks defense is playing, the 49ers haven't particularly played well on offense. Kaepernick and Boldin have clicked in the past two weeks though, with both scoring double-digit fantasy points in back-to-back outings. The problem, however, is that those games were against the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens, two terrible defenses.
If you own Kaepernick and Boldin, you have to sit them this week. I view this as a big statement game for the Seattle Seahawks to prove that they are still a legitimate contender this season and that the San Francisco 49ers are nothing more than a 'little brother' to them. Add in the fact that Anquan Boldin is questionable on a short week of rest, and it could be a really long night for the San Francisco 49ers and their fans.
