Relief Pitchers Deeper Dive - Week 22

Today and every Tuesday moving forward throughout the 2018 MLB season, we will take a deep dive into some of the lesser-owned relief pitchers on the market that are worth keeping tabs on.

This can be a good tool for those in deeper holds leagues, although any pitcher in a position to make a move on their respective team's closer job will get priority.

Below are my relief pitchers to target for Week 22 of the fantasy baseball season. Let's get to it.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball lineup tools and resources:

Under-the-Radar Relievers to Watch - Week 22

Trevor May, Minnesota Twins - 1% owned

May has thrived since being called up to the Twins on July 31st, showing a slight uptick in velocity as well as much better command. Working his way into a setup role in Minnesota, May now has an outstanding 12.34 K/BB ratio to go with a 16.8% SwStr rate, a .94 WHIP and a 1.94 SIERA. He has four holds so far in the month of August and should continue to work in front of Trevor Hildenberger and Taylor Rogers as the Twins 7th inning set up man.

Cory Gearrin  Texas Rangers - 1% owned

Gearrin has been a pleasant surprise for the Rangers bullpen ever since they acquired him for next to nothing in early July. He's allowed just six earned runs over those 22.2 innings to go along with a respectable 19/5 K/BB ratio but more importantly, seven holds. While the lack of bat-missing ability limits his upside, he can still be used for low ratio's and holds for the time being.

Jose Castillo, San Diego Padres - 0% owned

Castillo's massive size and strikeout ability get me excited about the 22 year olds potential long-term upside as a late-inning high leverage reliever. That doesn't still mean there's no value here now, as he has earned two holds over the past week, while allowing just one hit and zero walks while striking out eight over five innings since August 13th. The future of the Padres bullpen sure has a ton of bright spots, with Castillo right there among them.
