Wade Miley Signs With Astros
6 years agoThe Houston Astros signed free-agent starting pitcher Wade Miley to a one-year, $4.5 million deal on Thursday. He'll have a chance to earn $500,000 in incentives. Miley will bring a veteran presence to a Houston rotation that is in need of arms behind Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole after losing Dallas Keuchel and Charlie Morton to free agency. Expect Josh James, Framber Valdez and Brad Peacock to battle for the final rotation spot, with the other going to Collin McHugh. Miley, a 32-year-old left-hander, got a late start to 2018 due to injury and made only 16 starts, going an impressive and unexpected 5-2 with a 2.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and only 50 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings. He's never been a big strikeout guy (7.1 career K/9) and is surely at risk of regression over a full season in a hitter-friendly environment at Minute Maid Park. He'll need to generate plenty of weak contact to find success, so don't simply overvalue him for a potential nice win total with Houston's offense backing him.
