1 week agoNew York Newsday's Tim Healey reports on Thursday that free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso is deep in contract talks with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to a source. Healey also writes that he'll believe an Alonso/New York Mets breakup only when he sees it. Alonso's free-agent market has been frigid this winter, with all signs initially pointing to him eventually re-signing with the Mets. However, New York already made a "last-ditch effort" to bring the 30-year-old right-handed slugger back on a three-year deal for around $68-70 million, which he rejected. Despite already signing outfielder Anthony Santander, Toronto hasn't ruled out adding Alonso. If Alonso were to sign with the Blue Jays, he would likely split first base and designated hitter duties with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and it would give Toronto yet another big-time power bat for the middle of their batting order. Stay tuned.Source: Newsday - Tim Healey

1 week agoMilwaukee Brewers right-hander J.B. Bukauskas cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday. Bukauskas now has three days to accept or decline the outright assignment. If he accepts, he will be a non-roster invite to big-league spring training camp next month. If he declines the assignment, he'll become a free agent. The 28-year-old former first-round pick (15th overall) by the Houston Astros in 2017 from the University of North Carolina made six relief appearances for the Brew Crew in 2024 and only gave up one earned run while walking one and striking out six in six innings of work. He debuted in the majors in 2021 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and has a 5.04 career ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 30 1/3 innings over 33 relief outings in his three years in MLB. If he sticks with the Brewers, he'll operate as minor-league relief depth.Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Curt Hogg
1 week agoThe New York Yankees claimed right-hander Allan Winans off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, according to sources. The Braves designated Winans for assignment last week, and now he'll head to the American League East for the 2025 season. The 29-year-old former 17th-round pick by the New York Mets in 2018 out of Campbell University debuted in the big leagues with the Braves in 2023 and made six starts that year. He was hit around in his two starts in the majors in 2024 with Atlanta, allowing 14 runs (13 earned) on 14 hits (three homers) while walking four and striking out four in 7 2/3 innings. Because he still has minor-league options remaining, Winans will almost certainly start the 2025 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he'll serve as organizational starting pitching depth for the Yanks.Source: Milb Central - Chase Ford
1 week agoThe Washington Nationals have invited third base prospect Brady House to major-league spring training this year, which begins next month. Per MLB Pipeline, House is the team's No. 3 prospect. In addition to House, right-hander Jarlin Susana (No. 4), catcher Caleb Lomavita (No. 10), first baseman/third baseman Yohandy Morales (No. 9), third baseman Cayden Wallace (No. 11), outfielder Daylen Lile (No. 12) and outfielder Andrew Pinckney (No. 28) were invited to MLB camp. The 21-year-old House, the 11th overall pick in 2021, hit only .241/.297/.402 with a .699 OPS, 19 home runs, 66 RBI, six steals and 68 runs scored in 129 games at Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester last year. His aggressiveness at the plate led to a high strikeout rate and might have pushed his timeline back as Washington's third baseman of the future.Source: The Washington Post - Spencer Nusbaum
1 week agoMiami Marlins shortstop Xavier Edwards (shoulder), who had a breakout season in 2024, worked hard this offseason on his right-shoulder strength after suffering a shoulder impingement in 2022. The injury has affected the velocity and accuracy on his throws from the left side of the infield. But the 25-year-old was given a detailed throwing program this offseason and has been making 35-40 throws four to five days a week for the last seven weeks. Edwards changed his grip and release to get more backspin and carry on his throws. "Best it's felt in years," Edwards said. "It's not bothering me to throw at all, so it's quite nice to throw a baseball without pain. I get to really think about my mechanics and what I want out of it." Offensively, he slashed an impressive .328/.397/.423 with 31 steals in 70 games in 2024. However, his lack of power (only one homer) limits his fantasy upside in mixed leagues.Source: MLB.com - Christina De Nicola
1 week agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (elbow) had an internal-brace procedure on his right elbow last March and missed all of the 2024 season. However, he spent all of 2024 rehabbing in Boston and began throwing by September. He has already thrown four bullpen sessions this winter and is ready to be "full-go" by the start of spring training next month, according to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey. Giolito said he started tweaking some pitch usages and grips prior to his injury last year, and he's looking forward to implementing those changes in 2025. "We shifted the grip on my slider to get the shape and the profile in the right area and add more velocity," Giolito said. "We were working on the changeup and getting that back to the place it needs to be." The 30-year-old was a front-line starter from 2019-21 but he hit a wall in 2023. At best, he's a late-round flier for those hoping for a bounce-back.Source: The Athletic - Jen McCaffrey
1 week agoAccording to ABC Philadelphia, 33-year-old catcher Andrew Knapp announced his retirement from professional baseball on his social media page. Knapp has played in seven MLB seasons after debuting in the 2017 season with the Philadelphia Phillies. Last summer, Knapp made just three appearances with the San Francisco Giants and tallied one hit with two strikeouts. He posted a career-best .278/.404/.444 slash line across 33 games in the 2020 shortened season. During that season, he hit four doubles and two home runs and held a 15:19 BB:K ratio. Knapp spent the majority of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies. Across 359 career games at the Triple-A level, the backstop held a .258/.342/.414 slash line with 333 total hits.Source: ABC Philadelphia
1 week agoAccording to Francys Romero, the Los Angeles Dodgers have traded outfielder Arnaldo Lantigua to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for $1 million in international signing bonus money. The 19-year-old outfielder was signed by Los Angeles in January of 2023. Lantigua spent each of the previous two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. In 2023, Lantigua posted a .222/.345/.475 line with two doubles, seven home runs, and an 18:26 BB:K ratio. However, in 2024, Lantigua took a step forward as he held a .301/.430/.575 line. Across 49 contests, he hit 11 home runs and swiped six bags, with an impressive 33:36 BB:K ratio. Given his progression in the Dominican Summer League, Lantigua will likely open the 2025 campaign at the Single-A level.Source: Francys Romero
1 week agoAccording to Mike Mayer of MetsMerized, outfielder DJ Stewart has signed a minor-league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Stewart spent the past two seasons with the New York Mets after beginning his major league career with the Baltimore Orioles. Across 74 games last summer, Stewart held a .177/.325/.297 slash line with five home runs and a 31:48 BB:K ratio. In 26 games with Triple-A Syracuse, Stewart held a strong .280/.434/.451 slash line with three long balls and five stolen bases. Given his career .212/.328/.401 major-league line, fantasy managers should expect him to open the season in the minor leagues. However, Stewart has MLB experience and would likely be given a call if the Pirates need additional depth in the outfield.Source: Mike Mayer

1 week agoAccording to USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale, the Cincinnati Reds are engaged in talks with free-agent closer Carlos Estevez, who has saved 57 games the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies. Estevez was a first-time All-Star in 2023 and had a career-high 31 saves that year before combining for 26 saves with the Halos and Phillies in 2024. The Phillies acquired him from the Angels at the trade deadline last summer, and he had a combined 2.45 ERA (3.24 FIP), a 0.91 WHIP and a 50:12 K:BB in his 55 relief innings. In addition to the Reds, the Red Sox, Cubs, Blue Jays, Phillies and Yankees have been linked to the 32-year-old Dominican this offseason. He's one of the top high-leverage relief arms left on the open market, but he could share closing duties with Alexis Diaz if he were to land in Cincinnati.Source: USA TODAY Sports - Bob Nightengale
