3 weeks agoMilwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras (knee) was playing through a minor knee sprain during the Wild-Card Series against the New York Mets, according to general manager Matt Arnold. The Brewers revised their Game 3 lineup last week as a result to move Contreras from catcher to the designated hitter spot. In the three-game Wild-Card Series, Contreras went 2-for-12 with two RBI and three strikeouts while grounding into a double play. He also hit .257 (19-for-74) with three home runs, three doubles, 12 RBI, 16 walks and 22 strikeouts in 23 games in the final month of the regular season in September. The good news is that the 26-year-old Venezuelan backstop won't require surgery on his knee and should be a full-go for the start of spring training next February. Contreras has become one of the better hitting catchers in the big leagues.Source: Brewer Fanatic - Jack Stern

3 weeks agoDetroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson will make the start for the team in Game 4 of the American League Division Series on Thursday at Comerica Park against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians. Olson will be hoping to pitch well enough to win and send the Tigers to the AL Championship Series. In his first playoff start in Game 1 on Saturday, Olson pitched well, allowing only a solo home run while walking one and striking out four in five innings of work against Cleveland. In two regular-season starts against the Guardians, he allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out seven in 12 innings of work. Olson's home/road splits in 2024 were pretty similar, so he doesn't look to have a big advantage pitching at home. Overall, he went 4-8 with a 3.53 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 101 strikeouts in 112 1/3 innings across 22 starts.Source: Detroit Tigers
3 weeks agoLos Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith collected his first hit of the 2024 postseason in Wednesday's 8-0 win over the Padres, a 432-foot two-run home run in the third inning that gave the Dodgers some breathing room as they went up 5-0 in the game. It would be his only hit of the contest, however, as the 29-year-old finished 1-for-5 and is now 1-for-13 through the first four games of the series. Smith will face Yu Darvish in Game 5, having gone 6-for-31 (.194) off of the veteran in his career, although that does include one home run.Source: ESPN
3 weeks agoLos Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts set the tone for his squad by hitting a solo home run as the second batter of the game in Wednesday's 8-0 win over the Padres, as the Dodgers would go on to hit three home runs in the contest. Betts finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, giving him his second straight game with a home run. The 32-year-old did not have a hit in the first two games of the series, but he did have three walks in Game 1 which has led him to a strong .389 OBP through the first four games of the series. Betts and the Dodgers will look to close out the series in Los Angeles on Friday.Source: ESPN
3 weeks agoKansas City Royals starting pitcher Seth Lugo lasted five innings in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees, allowing two earned runs on just two hits, but he walked four batters and only struck out two on the way to earning a no-decision. Lugo posted a better-than-average 5.7% BB% in the regular season so it is uncharacteristic of him to lose his command. The Royals will need to win two in a row in order to extend their season, so if this is Lugo's final game pitched in 2024, it closes out a phenomenal year for the righty. The 34-year-old finished the regular season 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and a 15.9% K-BB%.Source: ESPN
3 weeks agoNew York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton went 3-for-5 in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Royals, getting the scoring going with an RBI double in the fourth inning that put the Yankees up 1-0, and later hit a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth that proved to be the eventual game-winner. The 34-year-old even stole a base in the contest after not logging a steal during the entire regular season (114 games). With Aaron Judge just 1-for-11 through the first three games of the series, Stanton and Juan Soto have been able to pick up the slack in the middle of the Yankee lineup. They'll look to close out the series on Thursday in Kansas City.Source: ESPN
3 weeks agoNew York Mets starting pitcher Jose Quintana quieted the Phillies' bats for five innings in Wednesday's 4-1 victory, allowing one unearned run on just two hits and two walks while striking out six batters in the NLDS series-clinching win. The southpaw appeared in the sixth but a leadoff double to Bryce Harper ended his outing. The 35-year-old has been masterful over his last eight starts, including his two postseason starts, allowing a total of three earned runs in 47 1/3 innings (0.57 ERA), so he has been a big reason the Mets have been rolling. Quintana's next start will come in the NLCS against either the Dodgers or the Padres, both of whom he's faced this season (Padres twice, Dodgers once) and logged a quality start in each of them.Source: ESPN
3 weeks agoNew York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor came up clutch once again on Wednesday, smacking a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning of the series-clinching 4-1 win over the Phillies. The 30-year-old also hit a double, finishing the game 2-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored. The slam was his first home run in seven postseason games thus far and the switch-hitter is 7-for-27 overall (.259) in the playoffs, but he's had a knack for coming up big when the Mets need him the most lately. The 4x All-Star will get a few days of rest before the Mets take on the winner of the Dodgers/Padres series in the NLCS.Source: ESPN

3 weeks agoThe Los Angeles Dodgers will use right-hander Ryan Brasier as the opener of a bullpen game in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday at Petco Park against the division-rival San Diego Padres. This will be Brasier's fifth opening assignment of the year. The 37-year-old veteran reliever allowed just one run in four innings in his previous four opening assignments. In his two relief appearances in the NLDS against the Padres, he's allowed two earned runs on three hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out one in 2 1/3 innings. Brasier probably won't go more than one inning versus the hot-hitting Friars in this one, so DFS managers should stay away. Right-hander Landon Knack will most likely be the Dodgers' bulk reliever in this one as they try to stay alive and force a Game 5 back in LA on Friday night.Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Jeff Sanders
