Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer will likely retire from coaching in the NFL, he told ESPN.com's Ed Werder. Zimmer was not expected to remain on new head coach Brian Schottenheimer's coaching staff with Matt Eberflus taking the defensive coordinator position. Rather than search for a new job within the league, the 68-year-old will step away from football. His career path included a previous stint with the Cowboys roughly three decades ago. He won Super Bowl XXX with Dallas and was eventually promoted to defensive coordinator. After stints with the Falcons and Bengals, he was hired as the Minnesota Vikings' head coach, spending eight seasons in the NFC North. His Vikings won the division twice, and they advanced to the NFC Championship after finishing the 2017 regular season with a 13-3 record. After Zimmer was fired by the Vikings in January 2022, he spent one year each with Jackson State University, the University of Colorado Boulder, and the Cowboys.--Andersen Pickard
