2 months agoAccording to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Tigers and free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman remain at a standstill in contract negotiations. The Tigers have been viewed as one of the favorites to land the Gold Glover throughout most of the offseason but have been unable to reach a final agreement. Bregman is reportedly still eyeing a long-term deal. However, seeing that both sides still have "mutual interest" suggests they could eventually work out a deal. Bregman has also been targeted by the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays, among others. Last summer in Houston, Bregman posted a .260/.315/.453 slash line with 26 home runs. He has always shown an elite eye at the plate, boasting a career 13.6% strikeout rate. Bregman would provide a much-needed veteran presence to a young Detroit infield.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

23 hours agoBoston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman said he used a torpedo bat in the batting cages and on the field during batting practice on Wednesday before the game in Baltimore against the division-rival Orioles, but he's unsure yet if he'll use it in the game. Bregman is batting third against Orioles right-hander Zach Eflin. The 31-year-old veteran could be looking to get his bat going early on in his first year in Boston after a number of high-profile MLB players have seen rousing success, especially in the power department, while using torpedo bats so far this season. In his first five contests with the BoSox heading into Wednesday's contest, Bregman has gone 5-for-22 with a stolen base, one walk and five strikeouts in 23 plate appearances. If Bregman does start using the torpedo bat in games, fantasy managers will be hoping it will lead to more power for the two-time All-Star.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoThe Athletic's Jen McCaffrey writes that it seems increasingly likely that Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman will begin the season the team's third baseman, and Rafael Devers (shoulders) will start at designated hitter. However, manager Alex Cora has refused to address the situation. It also makes sense with Masataka Yoshida likely to begin the year on the injured list after having offseason shoulder surgery. Bregman hasn't played second base at all this spring, and Devers has yet to play in a Grapefruit League game. With Bregman likely to start at the hot corner in his first year in Beantown, prospect Kristian Campbell, Vaughn Grissom and David Hamilton are all competing for playing time at second base. Campbell has the most fantasy upside, both short- and long-term.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 months agoAccording to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, third baseman Alex Bregman went through his first workout as a member of the Boston Red Sox. The third baseman took part in batting practice and fielding drills. Manager Alex Cora noted that Bregman is a Gold Glove third baseman and could be a "Gold Glove second baseman" if he shifts to that position as well. When Bregman initially signed his three-year deal with the Red Sox, there was speculation he would move to the keystone, as Rafael Devers is already the team's third baseman. However, given the emergence of second base prospect Kristian Campbell, Bregman may be deployed at several positions throughout the season. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during spring training, as he could see his fantasy value increase if he were to pick up multi-positional eligibility. Last summer, he posted a .260/.315/.453 slash line with 26 home runs with the Astros.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

2 months agoAccording to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Boston Red Sox infielder Alex Bregman will see opportunities at several positions in the infield. Cotillo noted that Bregman has already begun to see work at second base and shortstop during his first day of camp. Cotillo noted that the original assumption was that Bregman was viewed as the everyday second baseman when he signed with the Red Sox, as Rafael Devers has covered the hot corner throughout his career in Boston. However, given the team's "enthusiasm" for second base prospect Kristian Campbell, Bregman could be shifted around the infield. If Campbell were to perform well in spring training, Bregman could see action at both the keystone and hot corner, which would then move Devers to the DH spot. This would then move Masataka Yoshida to the outfield, as he was the designated hitter throughout most of the 2024 season. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring Campbell's development during spring training, as he will significantly impact the team's depth chart. Bregman could see his fantasy value increase considerably if he picks up additional positional eligibility.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
