After spending his entire eight-year career in Toronto, reliever Casey Janssen will finally be pitching for another team, joining the Washington Nationals on a one-year, $5 million deal that also includes a mutual option for 2016.
Janssen recently served as the Blue Jays’ closer, converting 81 saves over the past three seasons combined. However, the 33-year-old also endured some injuries, which contributed to him posting a 3.94 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 2014, While those aren't bad numbers, they registered as the highest in each category for Janssen since assuming the closing duties in Toronto in 2012.
At the moment in Washington, Drew Storen is set to serve as the team’s closer entering the 2015 campaign after his wonderful stint down the stretch last season. Janssen is being brought aboard to serve as insurance in case Storen falters, as well as to fill the set-up role departed by former All-Star Tyler Clippard, who was dealt to Oakland a few weeks ago for Yunel Escobar.
