ANALYSIS: Perhaps you caught St. Louis Cardinals' starter Miles Mikolas' debut this past Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers and weren't impressed. He gave up four earned runs, three of which were homers, and seven hits in 5.2 innings pitched. He also surrendered zero walks while striking out five batters; just over 70 percent of his pitches resulted in strikes. And while it doesn't' count for anything, he hit a massive home run to help his cause and put the Cardinals in front for good en route to an 8-4 road victory. These are good signs for his immediate future.
Mikolas has been out of Major League Baseball since 2014, after which he took a four-year sabbatical in Japan playing for the Yomiuri Giants. It remains to be seen if that stint has made him a better pitcher but if a team like the pitching-savvy Cardinals don't know, nobody does. Given Adam Wainwright's hamstring injury, coupled with his age, Mikolas could be a mainstay in the Cardinal rotation for the foreseeable future. Keep in mind Jack Flaherty is hovering about to take the fifth rotation spot, but don't let that deter you from grabbing a quick fix for your early pitching woes.
