ANALYSIS: The Phoenix Suns are a shambles, having fired their coach just three games into the season and already had their starting point guard, Eric Bledsoe, publicly express his desire to be moved. This has resulted in an 0-3 start to the year, but perhaps an answer to the point guard position. Early on in the season, Mike James, a 27-year-old rookie journeyman, was coming off the bench and providing solid numbers behind Bledsoe. Beginning last Monday since Bledsoe was sent home as the club seeks a trade, James has been starting. In that game, he scored 18 points with eight assists and two rebounds. While he hasn’t yet replicated that performance in two games since, James officially appears set to take over starting point guard duties.
For the season, the Lamar product is averaging 11 points, three assists and two rebounds per game. More important for the Suns, their record is 2-1 since he took over the starting role. Perhaps Bledsoe’s unhappiness was hurting team morale, and James’ fresh approach is helping his team, guaranteeing that he’ll see more playing time. While he appears to be splitting time at the point with Tyler Ulis, James continues to see more time and is poised to keep the position, setting up the rest of his season.
