Mets Place Jenrry Mejia On 15-Day DL With Elbow Inflammation

The New York Mets have placed their closer, Jenrry Mejia, on the 15-day DL after dealing with elbow soreness while warming up before he was supposed to come into the ninth inning.

The 25-year-old right-hander underwent an X-ray, MRI scanes and was given a cortisone injection after leaving the season opener on Monday against the Washington Nationals. The Mets tweeted that they will shut him down for at least the next 10 days after being diagnosed with posterior elbow surgery. His DL stint has been retroactive to Sunday.

Right-hander Erik Goeddel will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League before Wednesday night’s game at Washington, according to what Mets manager, Terry Collins, told reporters. Up 3-1, Mejia was expected to come in for the save attempt. While warming up, he felt soreness in his elbow, so the Mets decided to shut him down immediately. Jerry Blevins came in and got out Bryce Harper, who scored the only Nationals run off a homerun earlier in the game. Buddy Carlyle then retired the next two batters for the first save in his career.

Mejia, who had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2011, went 6-6 with 28 saves last season. Manager Terry Collins told reporters that Jeurys Familia might step into the closer role as Bobby Parnell is still on his way back from Tommy John surgery last season. He suffered his elbow injury on opening day last season.
