Melvin Gordon is listed as questionable for a Week 7 match-up against the Oakland Raiders. Last week, Melvin was benched after multiple fumbles and only put up seven carries for 29 yards and tweaked his ankle to add injury to insult. This year so far, the rookie from Wisconsin has not found the end zone and has under-performed for his fantasy football owners to this point.
If Gordon cannot give it a go for Week 7, Danny Woodhead looks to take advantage of the situation. Woodhead has only seen 10 carries in a game once this season, but makes more of his mark in the passing game. In the past three games Danny has caught 4, 5, 5 passes to go along with 84,66,63 yards respectively.
More food for thought would be not to forget second year running back Brandon Oliver. Oliver is far from the fantasy football must pick up waiver wire player he was last season, but last week he did earn seven carries for 23 yards and a solid four receptions for 40 yards in relief.
There are multiple scenarios to consider with all San Diego running backs.
1) If Melvin Gordon does suit up, their might be a huge running back by committee situation. In which case Danny Woodhead would be the best bet to start on your fantasy team as he has been consistent all year. Consider Woodhead a flex RB, and plant Gordon on your bench until he can prove he is worth more than that. Oliver will more than likely see only receive 5-7 touches.
2) If Gordon is ruled out, picking up Brandon Oliver may be a wise decision as he looked impressive during his fill in role last week and is the bigger running back between he and Woodhead. This could mean grabbing those ever-so-important goal line touches. Consider Woodhead a low end RB2 and plug in Oliver in your flex RB spot especially if you were really banking on Gordon to give you a start.
It is also worth nothing that Phillip Rivers has been on fire recently and last week threw for over 500 yards passing on the road against Green Bay. San Diego is at home for Week 7 against the Raiders and Rivers' numbers are better at Qualcomm Stadium on average. Expect Rivers to be slinging the ball around, especially to his running backs out of the backfield.
