Detroit Lions starting QB Matthew Stafford was benched in the third quarter of Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals after throwing for just 188 yards and three interceptions. Backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky took over for Stafford after he threw his third interception in just three quarters of play.
It doesn't appear that Stafford's starting job is in danger, but rather that he was pulled because the game wasn't close and he was having an off day.
When asked about benching Stafford, Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell said, "That was just like a pitcher having a bad day," Caldwell said. "Nothing changes there in that regard. He's still our starter. We just made a change to get a spark going."
If you own Stafford in fantasy, today's outing should solidify the notion that Stafford cannot be started until he starts to show signs of progression. The Detroit Lions appear to be a mess on both sides of the ball, and Stafford should shoulder a lot of the blame. In five games so far, Stafford has eight interceptions to just six touchdown passes, while failing to lead the Lions to a victory this season. Be sure to keep Stafford on your bench and seek out other possibilities.
