BALLER MOVE: Draft in Later Rounds / Stash in All Leagues
ANALYSIS: Matt Wieters had finally turned the corner to his bright career hitting a cool .308 with 5 HR and 18 RBI in 26 games during the 2014 season. Then he was shut down for the season opting for Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. Some guys just can't catch a break.
A stalwart to the Orioles franchise since his arrival in 2009, Wieters has been mired in mediocrity with his bat. Although the stats have not always translated on the field, a catcher who hits in the middle of a lineup are few and far between. Offensive minded catchers such as Wieters are an invaluable asset any team would love to have.
His elbow pain flared up again in Spring Training limiting him to DH duty. Rest will be the medicine for the time being as he will start the season on the 15 Day-DL. The ability to stash and save a talent such as Wieters could prove to be valuable if he has a short stint on the DL.
While other fantasy owners will surely pass him up in the early and middle rounds, snatching up Wieters in the later rounds will have its benefits. With a current ADP around 172, he can be a great undervalued catcher asset during your drafts. A clean bill of health should garner an above average SLG % around .450 with great power numbers from an offensively challenged position.
If he can build off of last year, 75 RBI and 20 HR is definitely possible. The batting average will most likely stay around .250 but an OPS above .750 keeps him viable and useful. The most uplifting stat to show the potential of Wieters is his 20.8 AB/HR ratio in limited at-bats last season. The only catcher to come close to those AB/HR numbers over a full season was Brian McCann at a 21.8 clip. Stash and save.
