ANALYSIS: After going 4-for-5 with his first homer of the year on Monday, Marte is hitting .297/.323/.398. Over the last two weeks, he's running a .920 OPS, helping to offset his stumble out of the gate. The 22 year old isn't a perfect player. He has no pop, his plate discipline needs work and he has some strides to make against right-handers. Still, he hit for average and stole bases at every level of the minors and was impressive as a rookie last season. Outside of the elite options, shortstop isn't exactly home to a wealth of resources, so it makes sense to use the position as a source of cheap contact and speed.
Though the Mariners are smartly batting Marte toward the bottom of the order against righties until he improves from the left side, he does bat second against southpaws. That's helped him tally a respectable 16 runs through 30 games.
