ANALYSIS: To say that Junior Guerra's 2016 performance thus far came out of nowhere would be a dramatic understatement. Guerra's 3.47 ERA and 2.85 FIP of have been incredibly beneficial to the struggling Brewers who are still in the middle of rebuilding their organization top to bottom. Seen as a transition SP to more highly regarded prospect,s Guerra looks like he could stick in the Brewers rotation as a 31-year-old rookie.
His 8.92 K/9 have been a welcome sight in Milwaukee, and he has managed to lower his BB/9 to under 3. But his Hard% contact of 36.7% could be a warning sign of serious regression and kick him back to his more comfortable bullpen role. For now, Guerra has been mixing a split finger fastball and four-seam fastball with an effective slider to keep hitters off balance.
Guerra also has four of his six starts going for QS while only allowing four runs in the other two starts. His 39:14 K/BB ratio shows that his command should stick around during his tenure in the Milwaukee rotation. The more he pitches, the more comfortable he appears on the mound. The Brewers look like they are going to give Guerra a shot to stay in the rotation and fantasy owners should give him a serious look as more than a casual streamer. Pitchers such as Guerra who can deliver QS and showcase a near 4:1 K/BB ratio deserve to be owned.
