Jose Fernandez shined during his latest minor league rehab start on Monday by allowing one run through seven innings, according to the Sun-Sentinel. The Miami Marlins ace is in the middle of a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter while he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
On Monday, the 22-year-old threw 90 pitches and allowed four hits with one walk while striking out nine batters. Over four rehab starts, Fernandez has a 3.20 ERA and a 25/4 K/BB ratio in 19 2/3 innings.
"This start did a lot of good things for my mind," Fernandez told the sun-sentinel. "My pitch count ... for sure, it's feeling better and better all the time."
The initial plan is for him to make his final rehab start on June 27 with Double-A Jacksonville before making his return to the Marlins on July 2 against the Giants.
It’s been a down year for the Marlins thus far. They sit in fourth place of the NL East with a 30-41 record. The return of Fernandez could spark this talented, young team to turn it around as the All-Star Break nears.
In 2013, Fernandez went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA and 187 K in 172.2 innings pitched. He followed that with a 2.44 ERA, 70 K and 51.2 innings in eight starts in 2014. In the midst of a terrific season, he suffered an elbow injury which required Tommy John surgery.
