Analysis: Oh, look! Jared Cook caught a pass down the seam Sunday, stayed up while two 49ers defenders bounced off of him and raced toward the goal line for a 49-yard gain before being caught from behind. The Twitterverse blows up, and people scramble to their fantasy site's add/drop screen to see if he's available because he has mad athleticism. His final stat line: two catches, 59 yards, zero TDs.
It happens every year. Cook reminds us of his stretch-the-field potential, yet in the end we're left wondering why he never seems to do more. If you're counting, that's now seven games into the 2015 season without a score from the Rams' starting tight end who counts $8.3 million against the cap. That's also six straight games without recording double-digit fantasy points. He is now the 27th-ranked TE in fantasy leagues.
It's not all Cook's fault, as this Jeff Fisher-led team maintains its run-first identity behind blue-chip rookie RB Todd Gurley. But at this point in his six-year career, the book on Cook no longer needs to be written in pencil. He is what he is - a physical specimen who never really developed the nuance for the position and could never seriously elevate himself into the TE1 conversation. If Cook gets you 10 points when your starter is on a bye, consider yourself extremely fortunate.
