After playing for only two teams throughout his decorated 14-year career, Ichiro Suzuki has agreed to join a third, agreeing on a one-year, $1 million deal, plus incentives, with the Miami Marlins.
Suzuki established himself as one of the best hitters of an entire generation during his eventful 11-year stint in Seattle, and currently only stands 156 hits away from 3,000. In fact, he has the major league record for most hits in a season when he racked up 262 in 2004 to break George Sisler’s mark, which was set all the way back in 1920. He also has the record for most consecutive 200-hit seasons with ten, all coming with the Mariners.
The ten-time All-Star spent the past three seasons with the Yankees, but now enters a different situation in Miami where he will serve as the fourth outfielder. Being in the National League, however, Suzuki could still receive considerable playing time when he’s not starting, with the potential to be utilized as an effective pinch-hitter or base-stealer. In fact, the most underrated component of Suzuki’s game might be his running on the basepaths, as the 41-year-old owns 487 career stolen bases. He still has a legitimate shot to become the seventh player in major league history to record 3,000 hits and 500 steals.
