ANALYSIS: Ian Mahinmi is not the sexiest waiver name, but I'm a sucker for under-the-radar players who can help in multiple categories. As a big man, the field goal percentages are going to be there for Mahinmi. The free-throws won't be, but hopefully you have enough good free-throw shooters to offset that. It's also not like he's DeAndre Jordan.
So what makes Mahinmi stand out above other waiver wire centers? While he is a prototypical big man in the ways I mentioned above, he adds some value in other categories. He's averaging 1.5 assists per game and slightly over one steal per game. When you combine that with decent scoring, strong rebounding, and some rejections you get a very serviceable fantasy player.
Even though he's not the double-double machine that Roy Hibbert was for Indiana in his prime, Mahinmi can still stuff the stat sheet a bit and is very consistent. Sprinkling in contributions across the board on a regular basis adds up, and that's all it takes to win a H2H Category matchup. Grab Mahinmi now and hope that he can stay in this rhythm at the very least. He's getting the most minutes per game in his career so the uptick in his career averages could be here to stay.
